I'm telling you Ms.Monroe know she can write her butt off- she knock it out the park again. I'm not going to give away any spoilers but you have to buy. I love it. You will love it. Everything you will want from the Gabrini family. Can't wait until the next one as long as she write I'm reading no question ask.

If you think that the traditional authorship of the Gospels can not be defended in an intelligent coherent way

This is a very well written little book which includes Chapters with very valuable background information (i.e. Chp 2 Book Publication in the first Century and Chp. 3 Authors'Names on the Manuscript). Even though written by a protestant, the use he makes of Church Tradition (what he calls Historical Evidence) is remarkable. If you think that the traditional authorship of the Gospels can not be defended in an intelligent coherent way, you should read this book. I wish this author or other, would publish a more extensive book where all the subjects included in this book could be treated more in depth. William R. Farmer in his book "The Synoptic Problem" writes "In the eighteenth century the central problem facing the student of the Gospels was that of chronology...The conflicting chronologies of the four canonical Gospels cast doubt in the minds of thinking men concerning the reliability of these documents as trustworthy witnesses. Attempts to solve these difficulties were hampered by the confusion caused by irreconcilable traditions in the church". To that Ron Jones replies "The most important issue to establish for the four NT Gospels is not to establish the dates when the gospels were published, but to establish who wrote them. Once it can be established that disciples contemporaneous with Jesus wrote the gospels, then we know that the gospels were published in the lifetime of those disciples..." This little book is a very good defense of the historical reliability of the Gospels.

About the Author
Kirk Dombrowski is Professor of Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For the last 25 years he has been working on the problem of social inequality and how small scale issues of family, hope, thought, and action interweave with larger question of industrial resource development and capital accumulation. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he teaches undergraduate courses on how to think about things that don't fit in...criminal behaviors, marginal groups, new social movements. At the doctoral level he teaches courses in research methods and core-social theory, with a focus on public health and health disparities. In addition to serving as a member of the faculty, he is also the director of the REACH Lab (www.reach-lab.org), a research center dedicated to Research, Evaluation, and Analysis for Community Health. Before coming to UNL, Kirk lived in New York City, and worked in close collaboration with Bilal Khan, Ric Curtis, Anthony Marcus and Travis Wendel as part of an interdisciplinary research team interested in issues of social health and social structure.

A difficult set of issues about Fundamentalist Christian missions in Alaska and an Alaska Native culture trying to move out the label of dark, primitive, misguided and worse in the midst of tremendous pressures political and social. The good news is the author is trying to cast light on a complex issue typically ignored. Wish all Christian Pastors, Deacons, Missionaries, Priests, etc. would tackle this issue while understanding this text is open to criticism, it is still casting light on an aspect of Alaska Native life that is both powerful and misrepresented.

About the Author
John Heath is third generation to the motion picture business. His grandfather was a part of the very beginnings of the film industry in the “Silent Era,” and his father was an editor through the “Golden Age” of Television. He started his career in film editing, and went on to direct and produce. Editing such dramas as "St. Elsewhere", "LA Law", and "Pickett Fences", comedies such as "The Bob Newhart Show", and "Major Dad" and action sci fi series "Warehouse 13. Producing on six series including "The Guardian", "Chicago Hope", and "Roswell" with three Emmy nominations. He has directed episodes of "The Guardian", "Chicago Hope", and "St. Elsewhere" and two short films "Reflections" and "Mama Doesn't know best."

Informative and entertaining

Concrete Wedding Cake (I love the title) is an informative and entertaining book about film editing written by someone who was in the editorial trenches. Great read for would-be editors and directors who want to understand the process. Mr. Heath delivers a wealth of general and specific ideas that even veterans might not be aware of. Btw, "concrete wedding cut" refers to something that looks beautiful but can't be cut. Read this book and you'll understand exactly what that means.

Concrete Wedding Cake is a lively, instructive, highly readable handbook on the art of film editing. Whether you have years of experience under your belt as an editor, just starting out in the business, or simply interested in the editing process, this book will inform, educate, and entertain you. As a post-production producer who worked in television for many years, I heartily recommend this book as a must-read for anyone venturing into the dark realm of the cutting room.

The book gives us a brief history of film editing from the early days of literally cutting and splicing the film to modern-day digital editing techniques. As author and veteran producer, director and editor John Heath explains, although the technology has changed, the most fundamental aspect of editing has remained the same over decades of film and television evolution: the telling of the story. Heath reminds us throughout the book that the essence of all effective editing, like filmmaking itself, is good storytelling. The editor should always be asking himself, is this the best way to tell the story? To that end, he offers a full menu of basic and not-so-basic editing guidelines, including: what constitutes the best kinds of transitions from the “A” to the “B” side of the cut; the complexities of dealing with massive amounts of footage from multi-camera setups; an explanation of the “grammar” of editing, such as maintaining proper looks between characters; how to “cheat” a cut; the best way to pre-lap dialogue; how to use sound effects and music to achieve the most effective dramatic results, and much more. Valuable “tricks of the trade” are also included, such as how it is now possible to create new coverage in the cutting room with HD and digital film. We are also reminded that “simplicity and clarity” is usually the best approach to good storytelling, and that “creative” or “exotic” editing generally needs to be motivated by the story.

Sharing a wealth of experience gleaned from his many years working with some of the top producers and directors in the industry, Heath has written a succinct, straightforward guide that teaches many essential elements of the craft without being overly technical or at all dry. He keeps the text interesting throughout by peppering his lessons with humorous anecdotes that illustrate the finer points of dealing with the sometimes-prickly personalities that populate the film and TV business -- an aspect of being a successful editor that should not be underestimated. The book also includes a brief guide for directors from the editor’s point of view, to help them collaborate most effectively and work in sync with one another. Overall this an excellent book for any experienced or aspiring filmmaker.

Whether you are outside of the Film Business or a long time member of the Industry, you will have revealed to you in understandable terms what goes into creating what we all eventually view on our big or little Screens.
John breaks down for us what is involved in Editing a Television Show from his first encounter (in the Stone Age of Editing) to the now complex and intricate Art it has become. An interesting and thought provoking journey.
His book gives us a tour of Editing and takes us step by step through the process of taking what a project's Director gives the Editor to the final product as a viewer will see it.
Anyone who wants to know how that Movie they are viewing got that way, should read this book.

C.C. Gross is a registered nurse, currently working part-time in an operating room. She practices pre-op relaxation to patients, using breathing techniques, guided visual imagery and Reiki. She has taught high school health and has worked in psychiatry. In 1996, she wrote a screenplay “The Swing” that made the first round of consideration for the Sundance International Screenwriters Competition. C. C. is a member of the Canadian Association of New York and the Connecticut Press Club. She was a member of the Canadian Society of New York and served as president of the Canadian Woman’s Club of New York. C.C lives in Connecticut. Her two sons live twenty minutes away on either side of her, but her daughter lives too far away in Boston.

Beautiful. Courageous. Heartfelt.

C. C. Gross, beautifully and with dignity, tells the story of her son Andrew’s tragic fall from a swing at the age of fourteen, sustaining a traumatic brain injury, and the subsequent years of her family’s courageous struggle to support each other as they face this catastrophic event, work through years of healing, face and deal with family dysfunction, and ultimately turn grief into joy.

C. C. chooses the high ground as she writes about this tragedy. Never does she resort to self-pity or manipulation. Instead, she tells it like it is—raw, honest, authentic, and genuine . . . sometimes with an undercurrent of humor. C. C.’s strength of character shines through her story.

I recommend RISING UP . . . FROM A LONG WAY DOWN for anyone looking for an inspirational book, those associated with traumatic brain injury, or someone just seeking a great, heartfelt read.

Gross gives us some much needed humor. She captivates you from the first page and leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for the sequel!!

A true grit story written by a true grit mom. Hell hath no fury like a mother protecting her child. CC Gross presents life and the reality that it sometimes is to us in a way that shows her power, her strength, and her courage. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll gasp. Thank you for the insight into a world that is foreign to many of us, but in some ways not foreign at all. Would love to see a sequel.

About the Author
Rosemary Edghill is a prolific writer in several genres, under her own name and various pseudonyms. Her "Bast "books, witty mysteries featuring a Wiccan amateur detective, were collected in "Bell, Book, and Murder". She has also written Regency Romances and fantasy novels, including several collaborations with Mercedes Lackey ("Spirits White as Lightning "and "Mad Maudlin") and Andre Norton ("Shadow of Albion "and" Leopard in Exile").

Edghill lives in upstate New York with several cats and several Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which she shows in obedience competitions.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Grand Sabbat

Ok, the title was to get your attention, hopefully it worked. Edghill's novel is a historical novel, a romance and a work of fiction. Don't expect too much from it, but also don't reject it out of hand because it has the word romance attached. It is no less well written than her Bast mysteries or her science fiction and fantasy.
Diana Crossways (yes, Diana of the Crossroads is one of the aspects the Wiccan Goddess) was alone in her small pagan bookstore in Salem Massachusetts, when a mysterious motorcycle courier delivers a package in the middle of a thunderstorm on October 31. When she opens the package she discovers that it is a valuable three hundred-year-old, handwritten grimoire with no information as to why she had received it or what she was to do with it. Just as she is examining the book there is a bolt of lightning that blows the electricity, then another that send her spinning into the storm. But when she can see and hear again, she is not in Salem. She is in a midnight, summer wood under a full moon, confronting a mysterious and attractive figure who both attracts and repels her.
She flees and stumbles into a coven of witches, who take her for a visitor from inside the Hollow Hills, a creature of faery, because of her mysterious and foreign appearance. They identify the book she is still clutching as the grammarie they had given to one of their members who had been slain four years ago. She is invited on the strength of this as well as her pagan jewelry to join in their ceremony.
One of the members, Abigail Fortune, undertakes to provide shelter for her, naming Diana her niece Anne Mallow, come from London. Abigail further gives Diana with the information that she is no longer in 20th century Massachusetts, but 17th century England. Oliver Cromwell has taken King Charles I in keeping and the Puritans are changing the face of religion in England. More specifically, Matthew Hopkins, the self appointed witchfinder general, with his companions, John Sterne and Mary Phillips (the Three Unspotted Lambs of the Lord) are on the prowl seeking out malignants (witches) to be destroyed to the Greater Glory of the Lord and the financial gain of the witchfinders.
While Diana waits outside the village of Talitho, hoping another turn of the seasons would allow her to return to her own world and wondering who the mysterious figure is she had seen on her first entrance to the 17th century, unseen forces set in motion events that draw Matthew Hopkins to this small village in rural England.
When Hopkins arrives, he brings not just his companions, Sterne and Phillips, but also a man known as Upright-Before-the-Lord Makepeace who seems more a prisoner than a willing servant. Upright-Before-the-Lord is Hopkin's hell hound, a creature he regards as less than human, redeemed by Hopkins from damnation, used by him to hunt down those true Wiccans whose presence give his lies about innocent people (made in order to bolster his credibility and line his pockets) some credibility. In reality, Upright is a creature of the fog and the shadow and the night, bound hopelessly to Hopkins, but seeing in Diana his destiny.
How Hopkins tries to destroy Diana and the coven who welcomed her and how Upright struggles against Hopkins' conditioning in an effort to protect her make this book more than a romance. It's a historical fantasy novel dealing with one of the more interesting sidelines of English history.

Time travel romance at its best

Rosemary Edghill can write anything.
In "Met By Moonlight," an unusual time travel romance, modern day Wiccan Diana Crossways gets transported back in time on Halloween (or Samhain, if you're more traditionally oriented) to 17th century England before the "Glorious Restoration." Trouble's brewing; so many people have been hurt by Cromwell's takeover that witchburning and witch-hunts are at their peak, and those who follow the land and the older gods are in danger of being tortured and killed simply because they are different.
As in all of Ms. Edghill's work, it is historically accurate, the dialogue is crisp and witty, the characterization shines, and the romance is believable.
As Upright-before-the-Lord/Shadow falls in love with Diana, and Diana with him, there are unusual paradoxes to be solved. Worse even than the usual, "He's from this time; I'm from the 20th Century!" ones that are endemic to the time travel romance genre, Shadow may or may not be one of the elusive Sidhe -- and as such, Diana feels honorbound to protect him (as well as love him).
Will she choose comfort over love? If you pick the former, you haven't read too many time-travel romances. Yet, the way it is done is unusually perceptive.
Oh, I also want to give kudos to Ms. Edghill for finding some very, very interesting ways to explain the sexual act -- ones that added to the depth of sexual tension between the two. Not many writers can write love scenes without overly explicit graphic dialogue; Ms. Edghill is one of the few who can. That alone would make this book worth the price; the historical accuracy, incisive and amusing dialogue, and wonderful characterization is an added, welcome bonus.

Since the very first book...

I've read all of Rick Murcer's Manny Williams books in the series in additiono to his others, and when I think back I can't remember how I was introduced to the first one. But thankfully, I was. The latest, "Vegas Rain", has Manny and his team of the usual characters going to Las Vegas to solve another case that turns into more than one. There is nothing new about that for the handsome Manny Williams and his Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI who are some of the best. Sophie the Beautiful, Flirtatious and Comedian of the bunch is her usual self and seems to be more humorous as the series goes on. This is a page-turner of a thriller and just left me waiting for the next one to be released.

If you want to read this you can read it as a stand alone, but you'll understand it much better if you read the series from the beginning. Characters will make more sense and so will the story. However you read them, they are bound to be addictive. Mr.Murcer builds the tension from book to book, but also within each story. He writes in such a way that I'm never sure if characters are going to make it safely to the end of the book. Great series of thrillers. And Chloe has excellent taste in authors, too.

ANOTHER AWESOME WINNER FOR RICK!!

Okay, I just this minute finished the book! All I can say is WOW!!! and WOW!!!! again.
Another winner Rick!!

I cannot believe that you came up with such an awesome book AGAIN!!! You have one vivid, yet real and vivid down to earth imagination!!

You had me on the edge of my seat throughout most of the book, YET, the last portion of the book had me on my toes for real.

I am so into your books that even I am beginning to think like Manny and his crew - which can be scary or a good thing. and now I see that you are working on Caribbean Fire - and Celtic Fire!!!! I am so, so glad that this series is non ending!!

And your other series as well - The Ellen Harper Psycho--thriller with Perfect Sinners.

Rick, so your readers ONE BIG FAVOR - please do not release The Manny Williams book and the Ellen Harper book at the same time - please give me at least 2 days in between so I can read one, finish it, catch my breath and then READ ON!!

How anyone can say this was a disappointing book is beyond me. They were either busy with other stuff, reading it in a noisy train station, or over tired and not really reading, just skimming.

The story has a lot going on in it and you need to stay focused, obviously the disappointed reader[s] were not staying focused. When in Vegas, there is always a lot going on, and sending Manny and his team there made Vegas even busier. And that makes for a book that has a lot of action going on all at the same time.

Rick, trust me, you did not disappoint me and I am sure 99.5 % of your readers [fans] will agree with me.
My current problem being - what can I read now that I am finished with Vegas Rain that will not seem like less of an enjoyable read compared to your books?

Vegas Rain began my New Year!

For an avid reader, this was long awaited and thoroughly worth the wait. I love how Rick creates his characters. In this book, he even pulled a bit of a Hitchcock trick, in the choice of Chloe's book choice! Not lost on me, Rick!

Good job this one, as with the others. You just need to do nothing but think and write -- no days off, no time for food or family -- get the drift? LOL

"Lost & Found in Latin America" is the result of my extensive travels for pleasure, my journalistic work throughout the region, and glimpses at everyday life in the places I lived -- Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico -- and visited. I scoured my travel diaries, old photographs, and letters home to my family, as well as conversed with friends and family members about all the things we did and saw over the years. Over the years, I realized that most people have so many mistaken impressions about Latin America that I made it my goal to show how those stereotypes can be so wrong.

On the Road in Latin America

This a gem of a travel book, written by someone who has crisscrossed the region many times and has deep insight on its charms and foibles.

I have visited most Latin American countries many times over the past decades on business trips, so I know the region well, yet Mr. Wright constantly surprised me with details I had not noticed and original ways of looking at things. I particularly liked his views on the subtle differences that make the national character of every country in the region different. This is a book written my someone who took the time to observe and listen with sharp eyes and ears.

Entertaining and informative

Anyone with even a passing interest in Latin America should enjoy this book. It is part travel guide, part personal discovery journey by a veteran foreign correspondent who collected rich anecdotes from seemingly every country in South and Central America. These are insights you can't get in a Sunday news feature. I appreciated his even-handededness in discussing the flaws as well as strengths of the peoples and places he encountered, and his humanistic approach rather than relying on condescending sarcasm a la Joe McGinniss or Paul Theroux. Stuffed with colorful stories.

A Must Read

I was born and raised in South America. John did a great job taking me back to my roots using an unique way to describe very vividly the day to day life and what is like to be a foreigner in South America. He enriches the book with history and current events. It is a must read for those interested in not only learning but also understanding other cultures.
